The Gifts

We are back in Ft. Worth and Tom is slowly recovering from his three dental implants...

We are also continuing the house hunt. I know my friends have beautiful homes and backyards in Houston (see previous blog) but it is pretty too, here in Ft. Worth, and we were determined to be close to some of our family in retirement.
We need to find a place soon. Tom is becoming too comfortable in the house we are leasing...and even though it is in a stately old neighborhood....it is too small ... is on the fringes of the neighborhood.....between two train tracks, near a noisy street and overlooking a pawn shop! I had to laugh at him today. He was counting all of the pluses of living where we live.(all things important to him)...There is nearby: a post office, an ice cream store, an inexpensive dry cleaners, a five dollar car wash and a place he can get a ten dollar haircut. Mind you no one in the barbershop speaks English.

We found a small three bedroom one story home that Tom really really liked yesterday, but it did nothing for me. I hope I am not being too particular...but I have to feel like I could live in a place as soon as I walk in the door. We have an appointment with a builder tomorrow. I know building is a hassle (we have done it before). But, I really am thinking about the big picture...and want to be happy there for years to come.

Oh! About the "gifts"! This week there is another wedding in our family. My niece Sara is getting married. We stopped by her mother's house (who is my sister Polly) and she had just wrapped the gifts for the bridesmaids. I thought they looked so pretty.

*on another note. Another sister called this morning to see if I wanted to ride to the Dollar Store with her. After all of these years of living so far away...it is so nice to be able to just run and errand with a sister :)

  1. Fort Worth? As in Texas? I used to sell pots and pans from door to door in Fort Worth and also in Dallas and even in Houston. I was a kid then and all of 17-18 years of age. I remember walking on the road from Fort Worth to Dallas and was so glad the employer picked me up and I got to ride the rest of the way. There was nothing but desert between the cities in those days. Not Arizona desert but Texas desert. I sold more pots and pans in Fort Worth than in either Dallas or Houston. It was one way to see the country, get paid a small sum of money and sleep in a cheap hotel every night. When I got to Houston, finally, and sold pots and pans for a couple of days, I wrote my dad and asked him to buy me a Greyhound Bus Ticket so I could come back home.

    1. Now that is a piece of history!. Funny, back in the mid'60s I actually bought a set of pots and pans (that I couldn't really afford) from a door to door salesman in Irving...which was between Ft Worth and Dallas. I actually still have a couple of those pans...

  2. It must be restless to do house hunting all the time and to like it both of you. Stef and me always have different opinions about big things to buy. We have been looking for a new couch for ages and now we finally have bought one we both like! We made it two so we both have one to lie on. Now we are waiting for the delivery in June. So I think you will find a house in the future.

  3. So glad the Baileys are all close again. We have always lived close, sometimes good sometimes not but still family. Tell Sara we love her and best wishes. If you build when will you go to Colorado?

  4. As this is your retirement home it is important that you get it right. I agree that you know whether the house is right for you as soon as you enter.

It really is an important move for you so take your time and go with your gut and heart. You can never go wrong then. Happy house hunting!

  7. If you lived in Chicago, you could run errands with your daughter, and your grand daughter. Just pointing out the obvious :)
