The Front Porch

Our neighborhood is a mixture of old and new homes. So many of the older (smaller) homes have been demolished to make way for newer, larger ones. I know there are a lot of people on both sides of the fence on this subject. What I have noticed is that architecture has changed over the years.
Most of the older homes were built with front porches.
It was a place for socializing. Neighbors walking by would stop and chat awhile,
and in Texas, before air conditioning, a place to hopefully catch a breeze after dinner.I grew up loving the front porch. It was the place we played jacks or monopoly or better yet, home base for a game of hide and seek. Tell me, did you have a front porch where you grew up? Do you have one now? I don't, and I miss having one.

* Home number one is vacant and for sale. It has been on the market quite awhile. I fear if it doesn't sell, developers will purchase it, and it will meet the wrecking ball...due to it's prime location. Stay tuned.

  1. I have never lived in a house with a front porch, but as a child I lived in one with a balcony at the front and one that ran all the way across the back. I remember being allowed to sleeep on it during hot summer nights.

  2. Porches are beloved features of older homes.

  3. Generally houses in the UK are much smaller and don't have large porches. It would be such a pity and waste if that house is demolished.

  4. Yes, we had a front porch on the house where I grew up in the country, facing east. A farm across the road, and a nice place to sit on a stormy night and watch the lightning- the wind was almost always from the west, the other side of the house, so rain rarely touched that porch.

  5. Those porches are so typical American. I knew it from movies and photos and was delighted to see one myself at my first visit to the US. With a rocking chair it is perfect to sit there. It would be a shame when the house is demolished...

  6. Dearest Janey,
Well, while living and working in Indonesia we also had front porches there. Guess it is not only in the South of the USA but more related to sunny, tropical areas!
We do love our front porch and it is a cool area.
    Sending you hugs,
    Mariette
