Th Courting Candle

An unusual gift sold at the San Juan Soda Co. is the Courting Candle. These were popular back during the Victorian era. When a suitor was visiting the daughter of the house, her father would crank up the candle to a height he desired. When it reached the metal he would either blow it out making a statement that the evening was over , or crank it higher, signifying  his approval of the young man.

  1. Never heard if this! What a delightful anecdote; must have worn on the nerves of the daughter's suitor!
