The Open Range

An enormous amount of land in the San Juan Mountains ( Colorado) is public land, which means it is not privately owned; and comes under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management. Therefore, we have very few fences. Colorado is also a state where there is an open range law. Ranchers can actually get a permit for their livestock to graze freely on these public lands. You never know when cruising around a curve, on one of the small state highways,  you will come across a herd of cattle or sheep, some of them in the middle of the road!. We never mind this and actually consider it a treat. .

  1. That is nice to have the freedom to let the cattle free. It would be war here, if a farmer would do this. Our country is too small and each part is devided with a fence around of course.
