A Final Fence

I don't know about you, but I like to walk through old cemeteries. We have two in this little town. One, way up above town, and the other along the highway, north of town. I hear that in days gone by...the upper cemetery was the preferred.
There are some beautiful old fences around some of the family plots in the upper cemetery. This is a favorite of mine, rust and all.
or maybe this one.

This one I find a little sad. Two year old Mary (1889-1891) is the lone grave surrounded by this broken down fence. It states that she was the daughter of some man...who has a different last name? No mention of her Mother.
I will try to find out the story on this one...and you will be the first to know.

  4. Old cemeteries are interesting places to visit, and often have beautiful fences, just like in your first photos. I will be waiting for your research on little Mary, such a sad photo.

  5. Cemeteries are great places to find unique fences. All too often the graves are of children who didn't last too many years.

  7. Old cemeteries are very fascinating. I've always wondered what the purpose of the fence was around a grave. The wrought iron is so pretty. I agree that last one is very sad. I hope you find out the story behind it.

  9. Hello Janey,

Yes, it always does sound a little odd but we too find cemeteries fascinating.

In November here on the day of the dead, the cemeteries are illuminated by the the lights of many hundreds of candles and families attend the graves of their loved ones. We find the whole scene very moving.

  10. Okay, now Janey, your civic duty is now to find a way to form a committee to repair the damage in the cemetery. If anyone can do it, you can!

  12. I really enjoy these old cemeteries too, and I am interested in Mary's story, do share once you discover it. It's funny but you can get so much history and interesting stories and situations just by reading the headstones. Great old iron fences too!
