Driving West

A lot of people that come to Lake City, Colorado don't know that two blocks behind Silver Street  there is a mining road (part of the Aline Loop) that heads up along Henson Creek. You can go part of the way in a regular car...but there comes a point where you need 4wheel drive.
When I first started coming to Lake City (over 20 yrs. ago) this road frightented me. The drop off gets pretty extreme the higher you go.

There is evidence all along the way that miners were here at one time.

Yep, the road gets higher and the creek gets lower

On one side there are sheer cliffs

and then it levels out ...making a great place to stop for a picnic.

Come back tomorrow and I will show you a 19th century mine, up this same road, that the state has finally decided to save.

  3. Oh yes, although I am not a driver, I am always scared to sit in a car along a ravine and no fences.... But on top it is beautiful.
