A Garden Fence

This little fence was donated to our museum. It was in front of a residence in the late 1870's in this little mining town here in Colorado. The house, like so many, was lost in a fire.

 

It made a perfect fence to surround our Victorian Garden on the grounds of the museum.

The Gardener

I would like you to meet one of my summer friends. Dana is a master gardener from California. She lives here all summer with her husband Bob. Dana is actually the third generation in her family to live in our little town.

She was born here in Lake City, CO as was her mother. Dana's grandmother Katie arrived in the U.S. from Denmark in 1877, making her way to Lake City in 1898.

 

Here Dana's grandmother is pictured with her husband Roland (a native of England) . Katie and Roland were cooking, in this old photograph, in a boarding house, in Lake City, back during the mining days.

 

They were married in this church in 1901

and lived in this little house, where they were blessed with five children. This house, by the way, is now a vacation rental. Roland sadly died young, from the influenza epidemic in 1920...leaving Katie to parent alone. Her skills of salting and preserving fish, that she learned in Denmark, really came in handy with so many mouths to feed.

One of Katie's sons made enough money in the oil fields of South America, to come back and buy his Mom this larger home (two doors down), which is still in the family. One of Dana's cousins lives here.

Notice that Dana's grandmother was tiny, below 5 Ft , as is Dana.

History of our town is kept alive by an active Historical Society.

Our Mornng Walk

We won't be walking this morning. It is most unusual to wake up to rain, but that is what is happening.
Tom and I enjoy driving three miles south of town, and walking at our lake. There is a road all the way around it, but that would be too far for me. So, we walk on the East side of the lake where there is hardly any traffic....along a dirt road.

 

 

I of course drag behind if I see wild flowers to photograph

 

We saw this couple fishing down below the road, and ask if they were having any luck? They said no, but it didn't matter, because it was such a beautiful day.

There were several places where small streams were flowing down the mountain into the lake

 

and there were also ripe berries growing wild along the road. Maybe someone will tell me what they are?

 

 

Flamingo Hill

Spending the summer here is not for the faint of heart. There is always something going on....and if there isn't, someone will come up with something. On Friday night we were invited to a potluck on Laura and Joe's beautiful deck (Flamingo Hill).

 

It is a wonderful deck on the hill beside their cabin with a view to the north....but the skies opened up as soon as we arrived.

 

Thankfully Laura had also set up tables in their garage. Not, exactly the same setting, but when you have good food and good friends...it really doesn't matter where you are.

So it must be time for the annual

 

Yes, that's right. Stick Horse

There were so many cute kiddos putting their little horses through all of the usual rodeo routines

 Some were absolutely darling

Look at this little fellow

 

When this little girl walked out without a horse, everyone still roared. She had all the hat she could handle!

 

Oh I forgot to mention. It was open to all age groups! Here's the 65 plus gang

 

and here is hubby Tom getting bucked off of a bucking horse. He is gong to be complaining about his back tomorrow. Come to our town, where you too can be a kid again!

A Chef in My Kitchen

My husband and I look forward to attending summer plays over the mountain in Creede,Co., where they have a repertory theater with outstanding talent.

John, pictured above is an accomplished equity actor from Denver,Co who has for years spent his summers acting in Creede.

 What some folks don't realize is that John is also an accomplished chef. Trained not only in the U.S. but in Italy and France.

So, a group of us bid on a dinner (at a fundraiser) for twelve to be cooked by John in one of our homes.

Tom and I offered our home to host the event

It's not that we had enough room at our small table

 

but had room to set up an extra table near the stairs.

 

The first course was a delicious crab cake

 

Followed by expertly grilled salmon, asparagus and served on a bed of favorable rice

and the grand finale was a scrumptious Upside down apple/caramel tarte tatin.

Everyone seemed to have a great time and I know they all enjoyed the meal!

Splish Splash

I saw this owner and dog having a ball in the river on my walk one morning this week

 

She was playing fetch, by throwing a stick over and over into the water. A great way to bathe the dog too!

Do you have a dog, and does it like the water too?  I am not sure that all dogs do.?
