On Friday of this week, we drove my daughter and two little granddaughters to Denver to catch their flight back to North Carolina. Gosh we are going to miss them.
Instead of the usual way back to the mountains, Tom and I drove down to Colorado Springs.
There was a very special place that I have always wanted to spend the night.
Glen Eyrie Castle was the home of General Wm Palmer and his family. He was a decorated General of the American Civil war and an executive of the railroad, founder of Colorado Springs and a philanthropist.
He bought a huge amount of land and built a castle for his new bride which he called Queen.
Queen and Palmer had three beautiful daughters and were generous with the community that he had founded. I love history but won’t bore you with all of the details, except to say Queen had heart trouble and couldn’t cope with the high altitude in Colorado Springs . She died young and Palmer remained in the castle with his three daughters even though he became paralyzed in a riding accident.
I of course was busy snooping around inside.
The place was simply beautiful..
It must have been lovely to stay in such a grand hotel and would help to lessen the sadness of having saying goodbye to your lovely little granddaughters too.
ReplyDeleteLooks so opulent and beautiful. How lovely to be spoilt in that environment. I imagine it's very quiet at home now.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place. I am quite familiar with the Garden of the Gods through another photoblog.
ReplyDeleteDearest Janey,
ReplyDeleteOh my, that was like a perfect bandaid on the saying goodbye for now... But what a beautiful and very special castle this is!
LOVE the oak panelling on the wall, how elegant that looks. You no doubt had to contain yourself as you were not staying there for three nights! Would have been lovely for roaming more freely without any time pressure and for indulging in that high tea... Next time, or maybe next life?!
But you made it there and strolled briefly the magnificent gardens as well.
Hugs,
Mariette
What a great place to visit and have a sleep there. You could feel like a nobility lady for a night.
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous Janey, beautiful spot to stay over and take your mind off the goodbyes. The high tea room is so pretty, lovely colour scheme 💚🌸
ReplyDeleteWow, I had not heard of this place. I would love to go there and see it in person and maybe even spend a night there too.
ReplyDeleteThat sounded like a beautiful place to go
