I'm Back!

As many of you know I have been away for awhile. In late Oct. we flew to Shanghai, China to join a fourteen day cruise around Asia.
We arrived a couple of days early, and one of the couples we were traveling with arranged a private tour of the City. On a previous post I showed you how modern the city has become in a photograph from a famous spot called the Bund. Above is our charming guide Lilly and our friends Sandy and David.
Our first stop was Faux Park and I was quite stunned by what all was going on there. Seniors citizens were active in all sections of the park. Here a group was ballroom dancing,
and many many groups were doing Tai Chi.
There were several very serious poker games being played
and also  a large choral group singing. When this guy saw us watching, he came over and started singing Shawnee River to David. He also wanted us to guess his age. He was very proud to tell us he was 89. I couldn't get over how friendly everyone was. They all smiled and waved and several wanted to talk to us. Of course sometimes Lilly had to translate.
I couldn't figure out why this guy was painting on the walkway?
Seems he was painting inspirational sayings with water...that seemed to dry up and disappear as fast as he could paint them.
I ask the teacher walking through with her Montessori class if I could snap a picture. Aren't they darling?
Kids in the park were having almost as much fun as the senior citizens
I thought this was nice. They have a hot water faucet at the entrance of the park, so you can bring your own thermos with tea leaves inside and make you own tea.
Next stop Jing'an Temple

  1. Sounds a great trip already. The best part is your interaction with the locals.

  3. Glad you have arrived back safely.
When we visited China so long ago the citizens were not allowed to dance, and we wondered why one of the first things the asked us was do you like dance. It seems that when you are not allowed to do something then the desire becomes even stronger. The next thing they asked was whether we had eaten, and then how old were we.

  4. Dearest Janey,
That was a lot of activity going on in the park!
It is refreshing to see a certain happiness, that means life has changed for them over the decades. Every human being has a right to some form of happiness!
The singing guy must be very healthy, he looked good and obviously loves what he is doing.
Welcome back home and now digesting it all and working it into a story.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  5. What a nice start of the tour with all the happyand friendly people. Here the people are starting to have enough of tourists all over the country. I am glad the Chinese people can have fun now after the horrible time they had before. Those kids loook adorable.
