A Volcano

Our drive from Texas to Colorado has us crossing the north east corner of the state of New Mexico. For years we passed by the Capulin Volcano, and always said "someday we are going to stop and see that."
Well, one day we actually did. Capulin Volcano  was designated a U.S. National Monument in 1916.
There is a paved road that spirals to the top....and from up there you can see four states.: New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. I was surprised to hear that it hasn't erupted in an estimated 58,000 years. So, I am thinking it is long overdue.
On many occasions we have seen wild antelope grazing between the fence and the volcano.. They always remind me of a song that my Dad use to sing:  Home on the Range. It starts out like" Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam. Where the deer and the antelope play."

  2. We used to sing that song too, I think that we must have known it from watching black and white Indian and Cowboy films.
Let's hope that Capulin volcano remains dormant for another 58,000 years.

  5. How interesting that a Volcano is just out there in the middle of seemingly no-where like that. Very nice shot of it and the fencing.

  6. Dearest Janey,
That is very unique for a volcano being dormant for that long. In Indonesia you never knew for certain... there often was smoke coming out and people had to be evacuated.
    Lovely sight in this photo!
